Champaign is the largest city in the Eastern part of Illinois, a land known
for its history and natural beauty. The University of Illinois is located in
Champaign and is one of the Big Ten schools in the United States. Another school,
Eastern Illinois University, can be found in nearby Charleston, giving the area
a distinct, academic feel. Charleston is also home to several historical attractions
that deal with Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, whose parents
were one-time residents of the area. History is further explored in the downtown
Charleston Historic District, which includes a courthouse and a number of prominent
homes. Nearby Arcola is home to a large Amish community as well as a Hippie
Memorial that was created by a local artist to commemorate the 1960s. These
attractions showcase the diverse nature of activities available in the eastern
part of Illinois and give an indication of why visitors return again and again.
